VoIP service allows telephone calls over the internet through the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and therefore creates unique circumstances, specifically regarding 9-1-1 emergency calls.
TRADITIONAL 9-1-1 AND E911 VERSUS 9-1-1 DIALING
At net2phone Canada, we offer a “9-1-1 Dialing” service, which is similar to a “Traditional 9-1-1” service with “E911” (enhanced service). With both Traditional 9-1-1 and E911, a call is sent directly to the nearest emergency response centre; however, with E911, a call-back number and address are visible to the emergency response centre operators.
With net2phone Canada’'s 9-1-1 Dialing, a call is sent to a national emergency call centre, where an operator will confirm the caller's location and then transfer the 9-1-1 call to the nearest emergency response centre of the caller. The caller should be prepared to confirm the address and call-back number with the operator and should not hang up unless told directly to do so. If the call gets disconnected, the caller should dial 9-1-1 again.
