FAQ - e911 for New Users

Welcome to net2phone Canada! As a new user, it’s important to understand how e911 differs from regular 911. Unlike traditional 911, e911 is not tied to a device, e911 is tied to your phone number.

Why Does Every Number Need a Service Address?

A key requirement of e911 is that each phone number be linked to an accurate address to ensure emergency services can respond to your location.

How Is My Phone Number Connected to Emergency Services?

Your extension (user) is linked to a business phone number, which is connected to an e911 service address. This setup was completed during your company’s onboarding process with net2phone.

Who Is Responsible for Maintaining Emergency Service Addresses?

It’s the responsibility of your organization’s net2phone Administrator to keep emergency service addresses current and accurate.

What If I Work from Home?

If you use a second device at home, it’s likely still tied to your business’s main address. Tell household members that if the phone is used for emergency services, the operator will see your business address, not your home. Always provide your home location to the operator when calling from this device.

What Happens When I Dial e911?

When you dial e911, your call is routed through a specialized emergency call center that helps connect you to the nearest local emergency service. Learn more about e911 procedures here.

How Does Emergency Services Know My Location?

Your phone number is linked to the address registered in net2phone’s system. Ensure this address is always up to date for accurate emergency response.

What If I Can’t Speak During the Call?

In situations where you are unable to speak, emergency services will use the registered e911 address to locate you.

What If Someone Uses My Desk Phone at Home to Call e911?

The emergency services will see your business address. Make sure to inform the operator of your actual location to avoid delays in emergency response.

What If I Accidentally Dial 911?

If you mistakenly dial 911, stay on the line and inform the operator that there is no emergency. This helps avoid unnecessary dispatches.
