Optimization Guide For Enterprise Networks

The net2phone Canada Sonar service has been engineered to work in most environments without requiring changes to firewalls or other network components. This guide contains information that may help optimize the network for net2phone Canada’s Hosted PBX service.

Rogers Hitron CODA-4582 Users

The Rogers Hitron CODA-4582 Modem/Router combo is not compatible with net2phone Canada’s service. Neither a firmware update nor bridge mode will resolve issues caused by its DOCSIS processing. If you are using this device, contact net2phone Canada Support before proceeding with the rest of this guide.

Required Protocols and Ports

For proper functionality, ensure the following protocols and ports are allowed on your network:

  • UDP/IP port 5060 – SIP signaling
  • TCP/IP port 5060 – SIP signaling
  • TCP/IP port 5061 – SIP-TLS signaling
  • TCP/IP port 9002 – WebRTC signaling
  • UDP/IP ports 20000-32000 – RTP audio streams
  • TCP/IP port 80 – HTTP provisioning
  • TCP/IP port 443 – HTTPS provisioning

These connections are initiated by your phone to net2phone Canada’s soft-switch. We recommend allowing outbound connections on these ports to all hosts, but if needed, you can specifically allow connections to:

  • proxy-pri.versature.com
  • proxy-sec.versature.com
  • proxy-ter.versature.com
  • webrtc-pri.versature.com
  • webrtc-sec.versature.com

For provisioning and access to online tools, enable TCP/IP ports 80 and 443.

Allow communication to the following servers for phone provisioning:

  • Yealink devices: rpscloud.yealink.com
  • Polycom devices: ztp.polycom.com

These addresses allow your phones to download their configurations during initial setup. Ensure these are whitelisted on your network.

Note: If your router or firewall cannot whitelist domain names, use the resolved IP addresses and include the net2phone Canada IP block: 204.235.80.0/20.

Bandwidth Requirements

Each concurrent phone call uses about 88 Kbps in both directions. If two internal extensions are communicating, bandwidth usage doubles.
For lower bandwidth usage, other codecs may be available—please contact support for more information.

SIP-Aware Devices

Some network devices have a SIP ALG (Application Layer Gateway) feature that can interfere with call signalling and audio. Your router or firewall should disable this feature. Look for settings labelled "Enable SIP" and uncheck or disable them.

Cisco Device Configuration

On Cisco devices, disable the SIP helper with the following commands:

  • router(config)#no ip nat service sip tcp port 5060
  • router(config)#no ip nat service sip udp port 5060

Quality of Service (QoS) & DiffServ Prioritization

To ensure optimal voice quality, prioritize traffic marked with EF (Expedited Forwarding) using the following DiffServ values:

  • EF DiffServ Decimal: 184
  • EF DiffServ Hexadecimal: 0xb8
  • EF DSCP Decimal: 46
  • EF DSCP Hexadecimal: 0x2e

Many third-party networks choose not to honour these markings; however, net2phone Canada’s equipment does add them to real-time packets
